Take the extra time to book from an offsite (away from the the airport) location. Let local people drive you out of and back into the airport. Save your driving for road trips from your hotel. The shuttle is free. Don't worry. If you're kind to the people and your car it will be a great experience. If the extra insurance that they offer you is affordable to you buy it. Otherwise don't worry. It's not a scam to get you to pay for previous dings and scuffs. If you want just call your own insurance before you leave and pay them. You are allowed to decline Aces insurance. Monday morning lineups weren't to bad at the rental office.

Most rental car places are closed in anaheim on Sunday by 4pm. So if renting to drop off one way from Lax to anaheim, look at dropping off to John Wayne airport which is only 20mins from anaheim. This way you can avoid the parking costs at hotels etc if you don’t need the vehicle during your stay.

Hybrids or electric cars are great for LA, as we have one of the highest gas prices in the nation and there are tons of electric charging station for every type of car with convenient locations across the city.

My advice is to find a smaller location near LAX to avoid the long wait, and to avoid renting during a holiday. Overall, I was happy with Budget.

AVR was a good place to rent a large vehicle. They have rented to me on a prior trip. Good team and good value.

We rented a Nissan Rogue and both pick up and drop off were easy and quick. We would recommend Sixt.

I rented a full size car for my wife and kid. It was great on gas.

If you are renting a vehicle in LA be sure to check your insurance coverage ( automobile and credit card) as you can save a lot of money by not having to purchase from a car rental company. Understand if you plan on using any toll roads and get a transponder from the rental company so you don’t rack up an unnecessary expense. Book a vehicle to suit your needs and get something that gets good gas mileage. Gas is around $5 a gallon around LA.

If you find a rental place you like, stick with them. I'd like to continue with U-Save when the need arises. They were helpful, courteous and it was easy in and out when getting vehicle.

Do not use Mex Rent A Car! Ended up renting from Thrifty. Very easy/helpful process. Will definitely rent from Thrifty again.

If you’re going to lax, be prepared for a line up. John Wayne drop off was helpful and easy.

Economy rental was very cheap and a great value for the money. However, if time is of essence, look in to going with a more established agency who can pick you up directly from the airpot or Uber to Economy Car Rental's location. That is probably going to be much faster.

If you’re on a tight budget, Ace appears to be the most cost effective option, just know you’ll pay in time rather than dollars (in most cases). Give yourself plenty of time when renting with this company.

At LA was everything easy and quick to star the journey. My only concern is about the cleanness of the car, since we picked up the car, it was not as expected.

Don't rent too small or too large. You want visibility, but you also need to navigate down residential streets with vehicles parked on both sides.

Pick as small a vehicle as is suitable because very large vehicles are difficult to drive and park.

You definitely need a car in Los Angeles to get around. You'd pay more in uber fees than paying for a rental

Strongly consider renting from Budget Car Rental. I have several times in the past and never experienced an issue.

Lots of stop and go driving in Los Angeles. Renting a hybrid electrics car is a great investment.

Driving in LA is not as bad as you may expect, the traffic is the worst when you get stuck on the highway during rush hour. Parking in city may be difficult to find depending on where you are but there is always a garage nearby, and quite a few have EV charging capabilities.

Read reviews before choosing a rental company , call to confirm if any hidden charges. Make sure get all documentations needed to show them( for example, insurance card) if you don’t want to buy from the rental company. Set your GPS “ no toll” if you don’t want to get fined

Driving from LAX to Anaheim and back is not a hard drive. There will be traffic in and out of LAX just leave yourself time. If you don’t need to take a turn off or exit for a number of miles /km stay in the middle lanes. If you have multiple people, get in the carpool lanes, just leave enough distance to get over to your exits (2miles/3.5km).

Choose high name brand rentals, like Budget or Hertz. The cost seems higher but will have better coverage, cars, and a smooth and quick process. Rental companies with lower prices will end up having more hidden fees and issues that will result in similarly priced rentals but with 10x the problems.

Ace rent a car was great! Be aware that they try to track additional fees and didn't show me the contract until after payment. I tried to cancel and they slashed the price by more than half.

If your rental company is at the “remote rental car center,” be prepared for two separate bus/shuttle rides. First you take the metro bus to a parking lot station, then find your rental car company’s specific shuttle (if they are there).

Make sure you have some form of GPS as cell phones don't always work when there is fires. A paper map would help. Be alert when driving and don't speed.

Stick with one of the big name companies that is at the central airport facility serviced by the airport shuttle.

Check your credit card insurance for what is covered and save/screenshot it as some car rental companies require it.

Drive diamond lane if 2 or more car. Avoid rush hour traffic. Enjoy sights watch for brake lights.

They try to sell the toll included for additional cost which is way higher than what you might have to pay in case of using a toll road. I travelled in 7 states and did not come across a single unavoidable toll road.

Make sure you use the major car rental agency when possible. Completely videotape the car when you’re taking it out check all your documentation because these little outfits try to scam you nickel dime all day long. It’s worth millions of dollars to them and commissions to the agents taking advantage of customers specially senior citizens is, a serious offense.

Coming from the East Coast, we were worried about the famous LA traffic and parking. In actuality, during our 5 night stay in West Hollywood, any where we drive to, the traffic wasn’t too bad. Meter parking & public parking garages were plentiful & reasonably priced.

There is a lot of traffic & it helps to have a passenger check your blind spots. Stay out of express lanes (as they are basically toll roads). Parking can be tight but just takes some extra looking around.

Rent from a higher end car rental company, not Ace. They’ll pick you up directly at the airport. The price may be more, but it will be such a better experience.

Be careful in certain areas for tolls roads. Try to book in advance and be a member who can walk to the car and not have to go into the office.

Don’t be in a rush, give yourself plenty of time. Expect to pay to park everywhere. This will make your vacation much more pleasurable. Don’t fret the small stuff.

Tips rent electric car for asia foreigner: buy the card directly to thrifty, we decided not to buy end up difficult to do the payment since some apps didn’t detected in our phone due to different region tho we changed it, still it didn’t appear. Be mindful.. Second, if u only traveling inside the city, u don’t hve to buy the highway pass. But if u want peace of mind then i suggest u to buy.

Driving in LA is fairly straight forward but not for the faint of heart, as it is very very busy, and people drive fast. Traffic congestion can change drive times very quickly, leading to unexpected delays, so try and allow lots of wiggle room for your plans.

Don't. Fly into another city. Just kidding, kind of. Know what your route will be and how to navigate heavy traffic. We didn't spend any time in LA, just headed up the coast and then over to the mountains.

Being from Texas the driving is slower, pay attention to your exit signs, be prepared for a 30+ min drive for 10+ mile distance

Driving in LA was easy.

Traffic was really heavy during rush hour mornings and after work, avoid driving during these times. Congestion can cause 15-20 mins of delays from one destination to another. Pay attention to highways on summit and valley. Also, pay attention to the HOV lanes that required fast trek transponder as there will be hefty surcharge from car rental if you went inside HOV that requires that. You can set "avoid tolls" on your Google map.

Driving in Los Angeles is a new experience from most of the United States. Very aggressive. Parking is all parallel on the streets if you can find it or you’re paying $$ to park in a garage.

Don’t let the rental companies up-sell toll passes unless you are sure you will need them. You probably won’t. LA drivers generally consider a turn signal as a an invitation to speed up into the space you want to move into. I learned to signal just before changing lanes. Many drivers in LA don’t signal at all.

Use a reputable rental car agency like Budget, Hertz, etc. The cheaper options have a different shuttle lot and very bad communication. Beyond that they have hidden fees that ultimately bring the price up to the same or more than your average car rental place. The smaller agencies exist to take advantage of renters, especially visitors from abroad.
